CHAPTER ELEVEN

Joe emerged from the sea after an early morning swim and shook the water from his hair. It was invigorating taking a dip first thing and it woke him up nicely, preparing him for a good day of writing.

He hadn’t seen Tilly for two days and found that he was missing her already. He wanted to go to her house and knock on her door then ask if she fancied doing something like going out for lunch. But he was trying to hold back because he was also afraid of rushing things and of ruining any chance there might be of them having a future together. Although that seemed like a mighty ambitious thought because he still didn’t really know what she was thinking and feeling. He also knew that they could both be experiencing some sort of nostalgia for how things had been when it was good between them, and that if they rushed into something again now, it could be a mistake that would lead to more heartbreak. He really hoped that wasn’t the case because if he couldn’t be with Tilly then he didn’t want to be with anyone.

He grabbed his towel and dried off then did a quick change with the towel wrapped around his waist. When he was dressed in dry shorts and a T-shirt, he rolled his wet shorts up in the towel and put them in his rucksack. As he hoisted it onto his shoulder, he saw a familiar figure walking towards him, so he raised his hand in a wave. Sean was walking Zeus and the large greyhound was chasing a frisbee that Sean kept throwing for him. Zeus was incredibly agile, leaping into the air to catch the frisbee then taking it back to Sean so he could throw it again.

‘Morning.’ Sean threw the frisbee then watched as Zeus pursued it.

‘Hi Sean.’

‘Early swim?’ Sean asked.

‘The best time for it,’ Joe replied, rubbing at his damp hair.

‘It’s the best time to walk Zeus as well, before the beach becomes busy. At least this way he doesn’t keep crashing into people or trying to steal sandwiches from their picnics.’

They both laughed.

‘He did that once when Giselle was walking him,’ Sean said. ‘She threw his ball and he chased after it but got distracted. A family had set their picnic out ready but decided to have a game of rounders first. It was a big mistake because Zeus got in there before they had a chance. Giselle had to go and get them some sandwiches from the café to replace what Zeus gobbled up.’

‘That’s a nightmare.’ Joe shook his head. ‘But then they did leave their food unattended.’

‘Exactly.’ Sean nodded. ‘Anyway, it’s good to catch you alone. I wanted to ask how you are.’

‘I’m good thanks.’

‘Tilly keeps saying the same but… well…’

‘You’re worried about her?’

Sean nodded. ‘About her and about you. I can’t help it. I don’t want to come over as the protective brother and all that but… She didn’t take your breakup well and since you’ve been back, she seems different again.
